Out of body Travelling
By Jacky Newcomb

Have you ever fancied flying to Australia for free or visiting other exotic lands? How about taking a ‘helicopter’ ride or even spiralling up to heaven for a quick visit?

No, I’m, not going crazy. I’ve done all of these things and more, and all without leaving my bedroom. I’m talking about the out of body experience (OOBE), and you can do this too.

I have a theory that every time we go over a humped back bridge unexpectedly, our soul pops out of the top of our head before coming back into alignment. Much the same thing happens when we’ve had a few too many to drink – the room isn’t moving up and down…you are! Well at least the spiritual side of YOU is. In your drunken state (what me you say?), you have difficulty in holding your focus in its normal position. We get that kind of ‘sea sickness’ feeling.

Some experts think that the spirit leaves the body every night and the only difference with what we call an OOBE/OBE is that we are aware that it is happening, or in other words, the spirit is the part which remains ‘awake’ and aware at the time of leaving the body.

Internet searches bring up pages and pages of information about out of body experiences and how to have them. Ok let me first tell you that I HAVE done this on purpose and it was not easy. It took hours of practice but its worth it right?

What’s an out of body experience FAQ

1) What actually happens during an out of body experience?

A. It is believed that when the body is sleeping that the astral body or soul (consciousness) lifts out of the physical body and floats free. Soul travel is very different from our normal dreaming state. In fact, the experiences seem clearer than our normal waking lives. Often our senses seem sharper and our surroundings more real.

2) What happens if our spirit body flies away and can’t find its way back?

A. The human soul is attached to the body by way of an etheric cord (A little like the umbilical cord which attaches a baby to its mother). Many people have witnessed this when they have left their bodies. Not everyone sees this though so if you don’t, don’t panic!

3) Is it dangerous?

A. As we do this every night anyway, all we are trying to do is to train the mind to stay awake and aware when this happens rather than do anything different to normal.

4) Is it like a near death experience where we see a white light and a tunnel (like in the film ghost)?

A. Not really. In both cases the spirit leaves the body, but when the spirit finally leaves the body for ever, the cord breaks free. The experience at the time would feel similar but we would know the difference.

5) What happens if I manage to get out of my body and then can’t get back in again?

A. You only have to think of your body and you find yourself being drawn right back. The pulling feeling is a little like a magnet. Of course when you wake up in the morning you are automatically back in your body again. Staying away from the body is the hard thing!

6) Where might I go if I left my body? What actually happens?

A. Most people just find themselves floating around their bedroom, or rocking over their own body. It can be confusing if you don’t understand what is happening because your physical body feels like it is frozen to the spot when this happens. Because our body is asleep at the time, it is very difficult to move the body even though the mind is totally awake.

Other people report flying around their local neighbourhood (which feels a little like that helicopter ride I was talking about earlier), or even leaving the earths atmosphere. Some people manage to take themselves to other planets and so on. Moving out of our normal surroundings would usually involve taking a finer version of our spiritual selves with us and some people call this experience Astral Travel (although the feeling is much the same.)

7) How do I find out more information about out of body experiences?

A. An internet search will help a lot. The more you can read about the subject the more confident you will become about having a go. Fear is a big factor in whether you have an experience or not. There are whole forums dedicated to experiencing out of body travel and chatting with others will help.

There are also some great books out there (available from specialist book shops or order over the internet from one of the big internet book shops).

8) Why would we bother doing this?

A. Many people believe that you can access ancient texts or the ‘book of knowledge’ and learn secrets about your own life and the path of the world by doing this. Oh and its fun to fly around your room! Some people report walking through walls, meeting loved ones on the other side and even travelling through time.

How do I leave my body?

There are lots of different methods you can try and many people have their own ideas on the perfect way to do this. The trick is to keep your mind awake and your body asleep – not an easy task. Have you ever heard yourself snore? This is what you are trying to achieve!

What happens?

As you drift off to sleep, you will feel vibrations flooding through your body. Then the spirit lifts up and away from your physical body and the idea is that your consciousness comes with you in the spirit form. You feel awake and aware and can control your movements using thought alone (that’s assuming you don’t just fall asleep like normal of course). Approximately 1% of people have had these experiences (that’s 60 million people worldwide).

Typically people see themselves looking at their body or seeing things which they would not normally see. Experiments around the world included people having to ‘project’ out of their body, ‘fly’ into another room and view a series of numbers which they had to remember and report back once they have returned to their body!

How do you lift out of your body?

1. Try doing a long run followed by dancing the night away at a club. When the mind is wide awake but the body is exhausted it can be easier. This can be the perfect way to become aware of the spirit lifting out of the body.

2. Another technique involves visualisation. As you drift off to sleep you imagine yourself sitting up in great detail. ‘Feel’ this actually happen. Keep repeating this over and over again.

3. When we are asleep we accept quite bizarre things as normal. How do you know you are not asleep right now? Exactly! Ask yourself all day long – ‘am I asleep now?’ Test the theory by doing something you would not normally be able to do when you are awake like raise yourself a foot up in the air (unless you are magician David Blaine of course!).

You have to do this as much as ten times an hour (so better try this at the weekend then), so that you continue the pattern during the night. Once you realise you are actually asleep then you are off.

Reader’s experience

Debbie Hall, aged 40 from Burton upon Trent

My sister told me about her out of body experiences and at first I thought it was a load of rubbish. One day I woke up to find my spirit rocking backwards and forwards over my body. I knew my physical eyes were closed but I was facing upwards still, looking at the ceiling!

I went mad at her the next day and blamed her for what had happened. If she hadn’t have told me about it before I would have thought it was a normal dream. Then about a week later it happened again. This time I knew what to expect and when I realised I was out of my body again I just decided to enjoy the floating feeling. After a few minutes I just floated back into my normal position and I wasn’t scared at all. It would be interesting to learn how to do this properly and try out some flying.
