The Dawn of Modern Spiritualism
Hydesville was a small Hamlet, approximately 20 miles from Rochester, upstate New York, which consisted of a small collection of simple wooden houses. In 1846, the residents of one of these houses were a family known as the Weekmans. Some reports show that the Weekman’s reported frequent knocking noises in the house, which were of unknown origin.
By December, the Weekman’s had moved from the house and the new tenants were the Fox family who resided there from December 11th, 1847. Immediately, the knocking noises became apparent to the family. Some reports indicate that the two daughters ( Kate and Margareta ) were suspected of causing the noises as an act of mischief, but it was shown that despite standing on feather pillows, wearing only night dresses, the noises continued unabated.
On March 31st, 1848, the noises became relentless and unbearable, as the family huddled together in one bedroom. It was on this night the young daughter Kate snapped her fingers and a knock ( or rap ) appeared to sound in reply. From this event a Committee was formed to investigate further and to agree what the code for communication should be. As the communication progressed, the story unfolded of a pedlar know as Charles B Rosna, who was murdered at the property and buried in the cellar. It wasn’t until a wall collapsed some years later that his body was discovered - along with a pedlar’s tin. However, news had rapidly spread about the Hydesville ‘rappings’ after March 31st, 1848 and about the mediumistic capabilities that Kate and Margareta Fox possessed. Abilities which remained with them despite moving out of the house in Hydesville. Subsequently, the sisters became involved in theatre demonstrations of this form of communicating with discarnate spirits and also in being tested scientifically by the newly emerging interest in scientific discoveries of this period in history.
Furthermore, others attempted this form of communication and many discovered they too had this mediumistic ability. The facts became clear that:
1. Organised communication became possible
2. Certain people had mediumistic ability
3. Communication could be facilitated by means of a code.
As a consequence of this new way of communicating with the spirit world, the message was being received by many that small groups of people should be sitting in their homes and developing their abilities to communicate mediumistically. At a time when most evenings were spent either reading or attending theatres, a new interest was being developed in many homes.
In the fullness of time, many mediums emerged and different ways of demonstrating spirit communication was being demonstrated in homes and public venues regularly. The communication not only involved evidence of individuals who had passed the veil of death, but great philosophy about the nature of man and the physical and spiritual realms were being communicated via mediums.
